JAMIE RYAN ATKINSON

August 7, 1981- June 27, 2025

The Great South Bay Coalition is deeply saddened upon the passing of Jamie Atkinson. Jamie has served as a key member of the Coalition for nearly a decade, has served on the Youth Enrichment Services Board of the Directors and the South Shore Community Organization Board of Directors. He hosted Meet and Greet events at Sayville Community Ambulance Company, hosted annual Drug Take Back Events, and was an advocate for those in recovery. Jamie has touched so many lives in his short 43 years. He has served his communities of Sayville, Islip township and Suffolk County with integrity, pride and an optimism that truly is contagious. Jamie Atkinson literally never told anyone "No" or "I can't." He always replied to any request with that amazing twinkle in his eye, "let's do it" or "I got this" and most often, "no worries-no problem." The impact that he has made will be felt for countless years to come. The lives he has touched will carry with them the spirit and essence of Jamie. For now- Rest in Paradise Jamie...we will continue your work and will always cherish the memory of our local community hero.

The Great South Bay Coalition is deeply saddened by this senseless and tragic loss of Gabby Petito. Gabby is the daughter of one of our Founding Members- Nichole Schmidt. Gabby designed the winning logo for GSBC which we still use today. This logo will serve as a reminder of Gabby, all the good she represents and the wonderful memories we cherish of this amazing young woman. We are all better for having known Gabby. Rest easy sweetest angel.

Our Mission

GSB Logo (3).JPG

The Great South Bay Coalition was established in 2014 with the mission of promoting mental and physical health initiatives in an effort to reduce youth substance use.  In 2018, with the help of our partners at Youth Enrichment Services, SAMHSA awarded our coalition with the Drug-Free Communities (DFC) grant that will provide funding for events in the Bayport-Blue Point and Sayville communities over the next five years. We are always looking to partner with other groups, organizations, and individuals that can build our capacity, and utilize this great funding opportunity in a way that will maximize its impact on the youth in the community.  If you are passionate about mental or physical health, or just want to get involved in a community organization, please reach out to us at greatsouthbaycoalition@gmail.com

Our Goal

Our goal is to continue to grow our membership, and collaborate with community partners, in order to expand our available services, educational programs, family-fun events, and physical fitness initiatives each and every year.
